“Deepak kshirsagar is a lesson for all who give lack of a guru as the excuse for not performing well” & “Deepak has a great heart and a fertile imagination.” These two lines from “The Pioneer” and “The Hindu” portray Deepak as a potential musician-slide guitarist. He is one of the rare Indian musicians and composers gifted with a unique expertise in the Indian classical guitar and Indian vocal rendition.

Deepak was born to the illustrious Kshirsagar family in Jodhpur. He started his training in vocal and instruments at a very young age under the able supervision and guidance of his grandfather Pt. B. N. Kshirsagar and his father Dr. Dattatreya Kshirsagar, both stalwarts of the Gwalior gharana. During later years he also trained under Pt. Satish Khanwalkar for slide guitar.

The intense and rigorous training under the able guidance of his gurus, along with his determination and perseverance, has made Deepak Kshirsagar a name is reckoning in the field of Indian Classical Music – both instrumental and vocal. Pt. Kshirsagar is gifted with a highly creative and restless mind which has goaded him to experiment with music .He believes and humbly states that all the prevalent forms of Indian classical guitar like Mohan Veena or Satvik Veena or Chaturangi and many more are primarily guitars only. Modifications, technique and sound may vary but it should be called Indian Classical guitar or classical guitar as we say sitar or sarod.

Having a rich background of classical vocal music, he was inspired to bring out gayaki ang on the instrument, suitable for sustaining the sound. Deepak also focuses more on the balance with bandishes in madhya-laya and instrumental gats which catch the attention of the audience. In his vocal renditions, he is influenced by the Jaipur gharana and imbibed it with his parental Gwalior gharana.

His power-packed performances are known to blend the everlasting traditional compositions and the intricate contemporary improvisations with absolute command on both Sur & Taal, creating a touchy, serene but solid musical impact on all strata of the audience.

An “A” graded artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Pt. Kshirsagar has been awarded with various national and state awards. His concerts have won critical acclaim across the length and breadth of the country. Pt. Ji’s academic background is not less impressive. He has done his masters degree in Music and has studied English literature from J.N.V. University, Jodhpur, obtaining Gold Medal. After resigning from The M.S.University of Baroda as a senior assistant professor in Music, in 2014, He is presently nurturing “Aalap- the Gurukul of Music “ and The B. N. Kshirsagar Foundation – an initiative to promote, preserve and propagate Indian classical music by giving a platform to the next generation of talented musicians.
